Perhaps Angie Mattson was destined for a life in music when her mother named her after her favorite Rolling Stones' song. She is an adventurer and free spirit who has no shortage of inspiration; moving to North Carolina with a lover at 18, traveling and living in an old blue school bus selling her art, then moving to Tokyo to work as a model. Not to mention that she taught herself to play guitar on a small sailboat in the Caribbean where she lived for a year. It was among these beautiful and sometimes ghostly green islands where her songwriting began. When plans of crossing the Pacific were fouled by El Nino, Angie moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. Angie Mattson will be playing on October 6 at The Saint at 8pm!!! Go check her out!

In the upcoming month, Asbury Park will not only be known as the City by the Sea, but will take on a new identity at the end of September: City of the Arts. In what will feel like three short days, September 24th through the 26th Asbury will accomplish more than we could imagine. Asbury Park will be hosting their own independent version of the TriCity Arts Tour. With activities ranging from art walks, street projections, art vendors, live performances, independent film screenings, gallery shows and outdoor eating there will be so much to cover!
M Studio is excited to contribute to the City Arts Tour with their M SPACE exhibit: Wall Ride & Print, Fold, Staple – The Art of the Zine, on Friday evening and Saturday day and night. Down their welcoming courtyard M Studio will invite creative minds involved in the art of skateboard decks to showcase their work on the long wooden fence. Attendees will be able to view the Wall Ride featuring design sketches and board artwork that appears both on no name skateboard decks as well as on some of the most widely recognized brands.
The second half of the M SPACE addition to the tour is The Art of the Zine. Lets cover the basics first. A “zine” is any publication of texts and images from the original source that is self-published with unique information that has a small, but devoted following. Billy Mecca, the owner and publisher of Beach Cruiser minimag and a member of the M SPACE is excited to host this side of the exhibition. After passing through the courtyard and entering the lobby, zines from far and wide will be exposed revealing a variety of styles, themes and characteristics of these publishers and their eclectic content.
Summer is not over yet, but it has certainly been flying fast -- must be since were all having so much fun! When it finally does come to an end the fun we had will definitely continue. Get excited for the TriCity Arts Tour..we're definitely looking forward to it!

As if Asbury Park doesn’t already represent one of the most musically historic and well-known regions in the country, we will really make a statement in 2011! Where Music Lives 2011 will bring in the New Year and take over our city. Year after year cities around the country are hosts to the traveling New Harmonies exhibit developed by the Smithsonian Museum of American History. The Smithsonian now accolades Asbury Park by choosing us to accommodate this historic year-long event kicking off in five short months. Watch out Bruce!
What better way to announce this musical heritage celebration than at one of Asbury Park’s concerts!? Mayor Ed Johnson took full advantage of the opportunity and couldn’t wait to get everyone excited at the July 2nd Southside Johnny concert. The New Harmonies exhibit will highlight musical history in America with a strong focus on Asbury Park. Musical historians will be traveling with the exhibit delivering lectures to attendees, enlightening them on all there is to know about music from our prestigious past. Throughout the year concerts will be held to emphasize music’s impact on each and every one of us while keeping in mind the very powerful educational aspect.
To get the residents of Asbury Park excited about Where Music Lives 2011 and to further keep them informed throughout the ceremonies is M Studio and their creative spin on things! The design team is in the process of creating the program’s website, logo and PR and looks forward to its jump-start in the near future.
We excitedly invite the Smithsonian’s New Harmonies exhibit to help us expand our minds and to look at (and hear) our city’s music in a whole new way!

Just as summer in Asbury Park continues to keep everyone busy, M Studio seems to have everyone on their toes as well! With numerous events planned in Asbury Park each day and night, weekend after weekend, M Studio wanted to become a part of the action. And by action, I mean “ready, camera, ACTION!”
Recently, M Studio appeared on CNN as part of a story highlighting small businesses and how they barter with certain clients to support each other’s needs. M Studio, with their artistic expertise, created a new and improved logo for Carr Custom and in return Michael Carr built and installed wrap-around desks throughout M Studio’s new office space on Bangs Avenue, that can be seen by following this link. The collaboration of these two businesses adds to the themes of Asbury Park: everyone’s easy going attitude, working together and enjoying a good time!
On the topic of a good time, you can now locate all the prime hotspots in town by picking up your very own copy of M Studio’s creation of the Asbury Park City Guide 2010. Each restaurant, night life venue, game room and concert hall is featured for locals to learn all there is to know about Asbury Park and for visitors to refer to when looking for the most ultimate experience of our city by the sea.
